Wilderness

How was it there in the wilderness, Lord?
Nothing to silence the inner voice,
nothing to satisfy the inner man,
so cold at night and burning by day.
Did you truly eat and drink nothing all that time?
How did you endure it?

It is as if your time must be framed by suffering –
this harshness a foretaste of what is to come,
temptation a prelude to Gethsemane.
Did you beg that this cup be taken from you –
Please Father, let me try it another way?

And when you knew it had to be so, did your spirits soar with the eagles,
a lightness that comes with knowing,
your last reserves of energy saved for this moment?
Did you shout aloud in the silence, “Yes!”?

How was it there in the wilderness, Lord?
