For me the image of Jesus entering the wilderness alone to face Satan, considered metaphorically or not, is quite a frightening one.

Has it begun then?
The quiet ash looks smug, while the smoke reminds of struggle.
But the birds cry: live, dance, play. The winter was long enough.
And it is tempting.
Too soon to know what the heart thinks.
The spaciousness of God fills the wilderness. Light blinds me to the cross.
